The following illustrates potential follow-ups for Article Z’s latest films.
• MARCH: Zarqawi’s routine
March 2006 marks the third anniversary of the Iraq War. Terrorist attacks and kidnappings in Iraq continue to make the headlines day by day, almost a routine. The steady stream of violence desensitizes, marking what could seem like the end of understanding and explanation.
Praised as “television at its best” by the leading French weekly Le Nouvel Observateur, Article Z’s Zarqawi, the Terrorist Issue emerges from a lengthy investigation by Fouad Hussein and a thorough analysis directed by Patrice Barrat, Najat Rizk and Ranwa Stephan.
This documentary is available in 52’, 78’- and 88’ versions. More straightforward, the shorter version makes less use of the experts. The longer version may be adapted for non-francophone broadcasters.
• APRIL: Berlusconi’s years
Whether or not Silvio Berlusconi runs again in the April 2006 Italian presidential elections, the legacy he leaves behind as Prime Minister is a central concern.
In Grazie Berlusconi, Fulvia Alberti takes a personal look at the last four elections in Italy since Berlusconi’s return to power in 2001 and how his decision making eventually encouraged the Italian left to reorganize and strengthen its strategy.
• APRIL: For the love of John Paul II
In Italy and across the world, Pope John Paul II’s death a year ago will be remembered with much emotion.
Hanuschka recounts the extraordinary tale of a young Jewish girl who survived the Warsaw ghetto, was provided shelter in a convent, fell in love with Karol Wojtila, converted to Catholicism and maintained a relationship until his death with the man who became John Paul II. Director Nurit Kedar details this woman’s story of passion and devotion in a compelling narrative
• NOVEMBER: Will Arnold win the West again?
Elected three years ago as Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger will run again this fall in order to renew his mandate. It’s just normal, this is the official term of his mandate. What was not normal was Arnold’s election in 2003, following a “Recall” by Republicans of former Democrat Governor, Gray Davis.
How on Earth did Arnold manage to win that campaign? Many of you did already broadcast Alex Cooke’s television version of her film “HOW ARNOLD WON THE WEST” which we edited right away in November 2003. Since then,Article Z produced with Alex a 90 minutes version of the story which has been in many festivals and cinemas. Like Canal Plus in France which is airing the film next fall, you might want to consider either the short or the long version of a serious and funny political fly on the wall satire.
• 2006: AIDS...AGAIN and AGAIN.
Close to 3 million people will die from the AIDS virus in 2006. Last April, Sinesipho: Why Must I Die? received the Best Documentary Project on AIDS prize at the MIP TV film festival. Upon its completion in December 2005, the documentary was aired in eight countries. Presented in Article Z’s unique mad mundo format, the film features reporters responding to the main character’s central concerns.
For Sinesipho, our reporters meet with leaders of the international community expected to provide solutions to the AIDS crisis: Kofi Annan, Paul Wolfowitz, Gordon Brown, Global Fund leaders, UNAIDS leaders, as well as activists in the fight against AIDS. Sinesipho moves hearts and minds in an effort to resolve a pervasive contemporary challenge.
