MAD MUNDO : Sinesipho : Why must I die?
tuesday, 7 September

3 years ago, Sinesipho was the cover girl of the Global Fund for AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis annual report, their symbol of hope and commitment to overturn the killer tide of AIDS. We went looking for her, to see whether UNAIDS, the Global Fund, and the world community made good on their promise. They haven’t.
Sinesipho is 15 years old now, and lives in a rural village, near Hamburg, on the stunning yet desolate Sunshine Coast of South Africa. She suffered sexual abuse, and possibly faces the looming specter of AIDS. Her life is that of countless others across the globe.
Are we letting millions of people die waiting for ineffective programs? Can we trust the multilateral organizations that failed the very person that embodied their existence? Can we trust our governments, who now boast to « end poverty », when their failure to finance the Global Fund has resulted in millions dying, and ever more infections. What are they doing to keep people alive? Unbelievably, simple solutions that would save Sinesipho and those sharing her predicament are being neglected.

Guided by interrogations and experience of Busi Maqungo, a young woman from the same region as Sinesipho who successfully sued her government to make sure HIV+ have access to life saving drugs, the investigation will look at the urgent problems and the solutions that could be implemented immediately, as well as at issues of accountability, treatment access and development that too often are ignored.
